This is one of the first and only online art contests I've ever submitted to, and I'm pretty excited about it.
This character is loosely based on a being inside the story of Nana Mirium, which I recommend everyone to find. I'll go ahead and link the story in the description just in case.
The story is about a village who is unfortunately under the wrath of a giant shapeshifting hippo who keeps eating and destroying their crops and leaving everyone to starve. Nana Mirium's father, a legendary figure in their village, attempts to fight the hippo...and fails. And then he goes to a neighboring village to get the best warrior...who also fails. Nana asks "Why can't I help?" and is received the most archaic of answers. "Because you're a woman."
SO This AWESOME GIRL goes up to the shape-shifting beast and just TAKES HIM DOWN and THROWS HIM INTO A CLIFF. Cause GIRLS ARE AMAZING.
Anyways, with that in mind, I decided to make my own take on the story. Instead of just a shapeshifting hippo, I had him take on a human form who goes by the curious name "The Bana ibambata" which roughly translates to "The Giant Hippo" (I did my best). In this loose take, I have made him a shaman cast from her village after practicing dark and evil magic, who in turn cursed the village barren with withered and dying crops. Knowing the source, the "heroes" attempt to pursue him and fail, and then Nana Miriam comes to save the day as he morphs into a giant mutated hippo beast.
Grab foot, throw into cliff.
I should draw her next. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to enter in the previous contests for Heros and Heroines, and I meant to draw her interacting with him fur funsies, but I ran out of time.
